What are they?
Our Overcoming Low Mood sessions are an opportunity for you to learn some helpful techniques to improve how you feel. The sessions are delivered by two NHS Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners who will help you learn techniques to overcome low mood. You will be able to download a free workbook to use throughout the sessions. The sessions often provide opportunities to meet others who may share similar feelings to you. This is not group therapy, you will not be asked to share your personal experiences with others.
IAPT is a service for adults and so if you are under 18 we recommend speaking to your GP about alternative options of help in your GP Practice.
What can I expect from these sessions?
There are a total of 4 sessions which are 1.5 hours long and run on a weekly basis with an option to book in for a 15 minute telephone review if you feel you need further support. If you are unable to attend the first session of your Improving Wellbeing Session, we recommend booking onto an alternative course as you will receive the most benefit from attending all 4 sessions.
We recommend booking only one wellbeing course at a time as some of the techniques may overlap. Our sessions work well with a minimum of 6 people booked on to them at the start of the sessions. In the rare circumstances a course would need to be cancelled, we would notify you immediately and support you in booking on the next available course.
How will this help me?
By improving your understanding of low mood, anxiety and worry.
Helping you learn proven techniques so you can make changes to feel better.
Giving you the chance to practice your learning between each session.
What does each session involve?
When low mood stops you doing the things that you would normally do, this session helps you learn ways to overcome this.
Discussing techniques that can help you start doing more of the things that will help you feel better and setting realistic goals.
Understanding how low mood affects thinking and learning helpful techniques to change this. You will also learn more about how to solve problems more effectively when you feel low.
We will explain how making changes to sleep, diet and activity can improve how you feel. This session will also look at how to continue improving how you feel after the sessions have finished.
When and where?
The sessions are held online on a variety of different days and times for you to choose from.
If you have concerns about your mood and require more urgent help we recommend discussing this with your GP first before considering booking onto our Overcoming Low Mood sessions.
Our next available sessions are scheduled to start as follows:
- Monday 27th September 2021, 10:00 – 11:30am
- Tuesday 5th October 2021, 10:00 – 11:30am
- Wednesday 27th October 2021, 10:00 – 11:30am
What will happen before the course?
In the week before your course is due to start, you will receive an email from our admin team and one of the course facilitators will contact you by phone to provide you with more information about your course.
The telephone call will be from a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, who will introduce themselves as a facilitator, tell you more about what the course involves and can answer any questions you might have. Please note this call will be from a withheld number.
The email will provide you with the meeting link, instructions on how to join and it will contain your workbook. This email will come from email@example.com, please add this to your contacts so the email doesn’t get lost in your spam.
Two days before each course session you will receive a text or an email (depending on your set preference) with a set of questionnaires. The text will be sent from SHEFF IAPT, and the email will be sent from firstname.lastname@example.org, please add this to your contacts so the email doesn’t get lost in your spam. These questionnaires will ask you about depression and anxiety and what symptoms you have noticed over the last 2 weeks. It is really helpful to complete them each week, as they allow both you and us to keep a track of any improvements in your mood.
What will happen after the course?
We hope you will find the course helpful, but sometimes it can take time to put the techniques into practice and notice improvements in your mood. We would encourage you to keep using the techniques in your workbook and give yourself a chance to practice them after the course.
After the course has finished and you have had a number of weeks to practice your techniques. We will contact participants who are still struggling with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety to see if our service can offer any further treatment or recommend any other services/support to you. This might also include participants who do not attend the whole course. Your telephone review will be booked with a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and will give you a chance to discuss the course, any questions and further options for treatment.
